New hotel for Dawson Creek
A new four-story hotel could soon be gracing the Dawson Creek skyline.
On Monday, city council voted to approve the development permit for the Aviator Hotel, which is set to be located off Highway 2.
This hotel was originally set to be built in August 2010 at that same location, but delays that came afterward resulted in the company’s permit expiring.
According to information presented to city council, the corporation has now re-applied with a new proposal.
They would like to build a 114-unit hotel complex, with a reception building with 46 hotel rooms, and seventeen single-story buildings containing an additional 68 rooms.
Chute said that so far, this is the only such hotel that the consortium developing it has going forward.
Mayor Mike Bernier said that he was excited that the project was going ahead after that lot was empty for so long.
Rosella Borek gets a road
A road in the Airport Industrial Subdivision has been renamed in honour of Dawson Creek resident Rosella Borek.
Borek is a long-standing community member of Dawson Creek, and information presented to City stated that Caron Jones nominated her for the honour.
"I’m very proud to be part of that, and extend full thanks and congratulations to Rosella, and the whole Borek family for the work they’ve done to help build Dawson Creek,” said Mayor Mike Bernier. “It seems like a small token to name a road after them.”
Casino shed approved
The City of Dawson Creek voted to approve the building of a new storage shed near the Chances Gaming Centre.
This shed will replace the two metal containers located in the facility's RV parking lot, according to information presented to city council.
The city's chief administrative officer Jim Chute said that this had to be considered by council because the location of the shed is on a special development zone.
Pipeline meeting date tentatively set
Dawson Creek city council has tentatively scheduled to meet proponents of a Peace River-Murray River pipeline on Nov. 22.
Currently, some members of the community have said that they would like the city to build a pipeline to one of these rivers to replace the Kiskatinaw River supply, whose reliability they have questioned.
No exact time has been scheduled for the project, and Chute said that the meeting will likely have to take place outside of city hall.
He added that the final date and time would later be advertised.
