The Boston Pizza Cup Peace Curling Association (PCA) District Playdowns get
underway tonight at the Dawson Creek Curling Club.
A field of nine men’s rinks will battle it out for one of two available berths at the
Alberta Men’s Provincial Championships. On the women’s side two rinks will
compete to determine the A and B-representative from the Peace Region at the
Alberta Scotties.
Two rinks from Dawson Creek, and one from Fort St. John are in the mix on the
men’s side. The Mile Zero City’s Jeff Ginter and Mark Heartt will contend for a
district title, along with Fort St. John’s Glen Godberson. They will try to advance
to the finals against Kurt Balderston (Sexsmith), Graham Powell (Sexsmith), Ryan
Konowalyk (Peace River), Cliff Kostiuck (Peace River), Mark Zahacy (High Prairie)
and Mark Pillsworth (Grande Prairie).
Kristie Moore of the Grande Prairie Curling Club and her rink of third Blaine
Richards, second Michelle Trarback and lead Amber Cheveldave will faceoff against
Sexsmith’s skip Delia DeJong, third Stephanie Yanishewski, second Janelle Sakamoto
and lead Heather Stewart in a two-game set on Saturday to determine their rank
at the Scotties.
Sexsmith rinks Balderston and Powell have to be the favourites entering the men’s
playdown. The two sit atop the PCA’s Sun Life Financial Competitive Division;
Balderston has 35 points with two spiel wins out of three on the tour, while Powell
(31 points) is the other tour champion having won the Mile Zero Cash Spiel in late
November over Dawson Creek’s Jordan Steinke.
Heartt will be teaming up with skip Darrel Veiner, Stefan Pavlis and Bruce
Frederickson to make up one of the Dawson Creek rinks. Jeff Ginter and Tracy
Steinke will be teaming up with their boys Jordan (Steinke) and Jason (Ginter) to
make up the other Dawson Creek squad.
Heartt will play Godberson first in the opening round of the A-qualifier; Ginter
has drawn Powell; Zahacy will face Kostiuck; and Balderston will meet Pillsworth.
Konowalyk received a first-round bye and will face the winner of Balderston and
Pillsworth on Saturday.
In the women’s draw, Moore’s rink has 12 points in the PCA competitive divison,
while DeJong is in fourth place in the Encana Challenge Division.
The men’s provincials will be held Feb. 06 to 13 at the Leduc Recreation Centre in
Leduc, AB and the Scotties are scheduled to begin Jan. 23 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
