Hannah Brunn was the top Dawson Creek finisher at the B.C. Long Track Championships this weekend in Fort St. John.
Brunn won silver in the Train to Train category – the Canadian Championships qualifying class – for 13-year olds.
Across the board, Brunn took second in all four categories she raced in giving her 3,264 points for the event, second only to Kelowna’s Connie Kapak who finished the weekend with a perfect score of 4,000.
Brunn clocked a 12.39 in the 100m pursuit; scored a 48.81 in the 500m; finished the grueling 3000m with a time of 5:31.06 and was second crossing the line in the 300m mass start behind Kapak.
Before provincials, Brunn said it was her target to make the podium and crack the top-five to qualify for nationals in Winnipeg, Man. Her placing at provincials should be good enough to earn her a berth at the Canadian Championships.
For other Dawson Creek skaters, Pauline and Hadley Sutherland, who weren’t skating for a spot at nationals, the two placed fourth overall in their respected categories.
Pauline, 15, won the iron medal (fourth) in the Open Female class while clocking the third fastest times of the meet in the 500m and 1,000m. Her times of 44.39 in the 500m, and 1:29.86 in the 1,000m were third only to Kamloops’ Sara Spence and Prince George’s Carolina Hiller.
For Hadley, 16, his 45.89 in the 500m, 1:34.31 in the 1,000m, 2:27.32 in the 1,500 m and 5:20.04 in the 3,000m earned him the iron medal in the Open Male category.
Junior skater Jacob Graham of Dawson Creek, who trains in Fort St. John, competed in only two races, clocking the fastest 500m time with a 37.82 and finishing three-tenths of a second behind Jay Morrison in the 1,000m with a 1:14.30.
In the men’s Masters group, Dale Sutherland of Dawson Creek finished a spot out of the overall medals.
Also competing for the Dawson Creek Speedskating Club, was Ian Brunn, Bryher Cook, Brianna Winiandy and Aaron and Adam Cameron. These youngsters raced in the Fundamental category (ages 5 to 10).
Over 90 skaters from ten clubs throughout the province attended the two-day event at the Pomeroy Sports Centre.
