A 100-foot bridge made up of two shipping containers could cross an uncovered portion of the the Kin Park Walking Path, if the Rotary Club can convince City Council to approve the plan.

The bridge would feature two 50 foot shipping containers welded together, with windows built into them to allow natural sunlight. The move would cover a portion of the trail near the Encana Events Centre that has water blocking its path.

Councillors welcomed the move.

“We've been looking for options for quite a while to finish tying in both sides of the path together to walk right from the multiplex to Rotary Lake," said Mayor Mike Bernier. "This is something that's definitely needed."

Councillor Duncan Malkinson said that he thought the proposal was "awesome."

"We've got contact with an engineering firm that will do the design and the structural part of the work to make it meet the City requirements," said Larry Moody of the Rotary Noon Club. "It looks like it would be an excellent bridge or facility for that area."

Because the City needs to sign off on the project and assume liability in case someone is injured while on the bridge, it needs to be looked at by the City first. Council made a motion to approve the bridge after  staff could issue a recommendation whether or not to proceed with the project.

Councillor Cheryl Shuman expressed some concerns about the possible safety of the bridge.

"I was wondering if this could provide a space for housing, if it would be unsafe for housing due to being covered the way it is, people might not feel safe walking through it," she added. "There could be somebody making a home in it."

Councillor Charlie Parslow also had a concern about people marking the bridge with graffiti.

Councillor Shaely Wilbur said that the Rotary Club could consider talking with potential graffiti artists and making it an art project.

"If they own it, they won't tag it."

City councillors also thanked the Rotary Club for their efforts in bringing this forward to the city.
