The Grande Prairie/Dawson Creek rink of (from left) Colin Griffith, Rob Griffith, Murray Gummer and Dave Hay are in Calgary this week to defend their Alberta men's masters curling title.

Colin Griffith’s Grande Priarie rink, with a dash of Dawson Creek content, begins their defence of last year’s Master Men’s Provincial Championship, today, in Calgary, Alta.

The Peace Region crew, which includes Dawson Creek curlers Rob Griffith (third) and David Hay (lead), along with Grande Prairie’s Murray Gummer, represented Alberta last year at the 2012 Canadian Masters Championships.

Griffith qualified for provincials two weeks ago when he won the Peace Curling Association’s A-side final 6-3 over High Prairie’s David Marx.

Marx would later go onto win the B-side over Brian Rolling of Peace River.

At last year’s provincials in Edmonton, the Griffith rink took second place after the round robin before cruising past Marx in the semifinal to face Dave Rutherford. In the finals, Griffith won 6-5 to punch his ticket to nationals where he would finish with a respectable 4-5 record.

Griffith begins his run at a repeat Alberta title today in the first draw against Calgary’s Harold Breckenridge.
