Tomslake’s Fiona Benson has carried her successful cross-country season over to the indoor track after breaking her own school record at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. this month.

Runner Fiona Benson continues to have a breakout season as a member of the Trinity Western Spartans track and field team.

The Tomslake native broke a school record in the 3000m while competing at the Husky Classic at the University of Washington, earlier this month.

Benson set a personal best time of 9:29.12 in the distance on Washington’s Dempsey Indoor track on Feb. 9, breaking her previously set school record of 9:54.76, also in Washington last season.

Her time placed her 23rd overall in the women’s open final.

The third-year student is coming of an impeccable cross-country season competing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level.

Benson placed fifth at the national championships in November, earning Canada West Athlete of the Year and CIS First Team All-Canadian honours.

Later that month, Benson finished as the sixth fastest Canadian at the national cross-country championships in Vancouver, making her a junior national team candidate.

The Spartans track and field team will be in Regina, Sask. this weekend for the Canada West Championships. The CIS Track and Field Championships scheduled two weeks later in Edmonton, Alta. March 7-9.
